Grain-Free, Sugar-Free Doggy Cakes

Some pooches just can’t handle grains – and some, like children, don’t behave so well when they ingest sugar. These dogs needn’t miss out on having their own birthday cake! Here are two scrumptious recipes for canine cakes which use no grains and no added sugar. Your dog will love the taste, and we reckon you might not find them too bad either! 1. Banana Peanut Butter Doggy Cakes
Makes 12 cupcakes

You will need:
o 1 cup organic peanut butter (no added salt or sugar)
o 2 mashed bananas
o 3 eggs
o ¼ cup cottage cheese
o ½ cup coconut flour
o ¾ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
For the frosting:
o ¾ cup cream cheese
o ½ cup peanut butter extra
o 1 tablespoon coconut oil
What to do:
Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Grease a 12 cup muffin tin. Combine peanut butter, bananas, eggs and cottage cheese in a large bowl. Stir well and when combined, add bicarbonate of soda and coconut flour and mix well. Fill each muffin cup ¾ full with batter and bake for 20-25 minutes.
Make the frosting by combining peanut butter, coconut oil and cream cheese until smooth in consistency.
Ice cool cupcakes.

2. Peanut Butter Apple Mini Cake
Makes 1 mini cake

You will need:
o 1 egg
o ½ apple, diced finely (skin on)
o 3 tablespoons organic peanut butter (unsalted and unsweetened)
o ½ teaspoon baking powder
What to do:
Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Grease a ramekin, or jumbo muffin tin. Combine all ingredients. Stir well and when combined, fill ramekin with batter and bake for 20minutes. A skewer will come out clean if inserted in centre of cake.
Allow to cool and serve to Fido! This cake may also be iced as per the recipe above, but will go down just as well on its own due to the natural sweetness and moistness afforded by the apple.
Remember that portion control is key when giving your dog any kind of treat – you don’t want to give him a bellyache!
